Jacob Crivello creates emotion through re-imagined micro- landscapes. Where contemporary figures are dwarfed by landscapes of craggy moss-covered rocks, sandy cliff edges, watery gulleys, sparse vegetation, tiny alpine flowers. Couples in quiet dialogue, individuals sitting alone in contemplative, often melancholic poses. These resonate with emotional force and feel curiously reminiscent of the well-known Victorian watercolourists and poets.
Positioned under glass domes and in perspex wall hung cases, these landscapes are micro-worlds we can view from a reassuringly safe distance. Indicative of curiosities in a 19th century museum collection, yet at the same time offer a haunting reminder of a world depleted in natural resources through climate change.
Jacob Crivello is based in Lewes on the South coast and has exhibited work in the UK and at international art fairs in both Sweden and Brussels.
