Susan Andreae is a Sculptor and Printmaker. Having grown up in London, she is fascinated by the complexity of living in the city, the crowds, commuters, the architecture and visual energy of urban life, all of which has informed the imagery used in her etchings. She is particularly interested in individual figures within a crowd, sometimes escaping their environment, or blending into the architecture around them. She can often be seen in the streets working directly on her etching plates to capture first hand the pulse of life in London.
Her starting point always comes from detailed observation of her subject whether it is city figures, buildings or trees, and then capturing the feeling they create through her drawing. Susan uses the layering that is possible in printmaking, to superimpose multiple images and shapes to add intrigue. Etching is her preferred technique and anything from two to seven metal plates, with different images, are printed on top of each other. This over-printing produces unexpected juxtaposition of shapes, which in turn give rise to new directions in the image and keep the ideas fresh as she progresses the work to its final form. The layering also gives a movement and energy to her figures as if they are rushing for that last train or late for a meeting.
In her recent 'Tree Forms', Susan has found an equivalent complexity in natural forms which she similarly layers in the printing. Trees become figures, standing alone or in groups, intertwined in their branches to create a richly textured final image.
Susan Andreae exhibits and sells her work in galleries around London including the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. She was trained at Kingston University where she gained a first class BA (Hons) in Sculpture followed by postgraduate studies at City and Guilds of London Art School. Some years later, she completed an MA in Printmaking at Wimbledon School of Art.
Having studied to MA level, Susan believes passionately in helping others to develop their own creativity and currently teaches Printmaking at Kensington and Chelsea College, London, where she was Head of Printmaking for 12 years.
