THE WOODS OF DAEDALUS IMAGINING ORPHEUS SNOWFALL RED BOOTS SILENT SEA

Nathan Jones

Nathan Jones’s paintings present highly theatrical landscapes that, in many ways, resemble stage sets. Cabins nestle invitingly within foreboding woods, gentle mists snugly envelop taxidermy animals, and actors appear caught unawares, lost in thought. His paintings encourage viewers to ask questions: who could live here, why are the animals stuffed, and how natural is this vision and representation of nature? There is a creeping sense that all is not as it seems, and the paintings explore and push this boundary between the beginning and end of illusion.

Rich in both atmosphere and ambiguity, these self-contained worlds gesture towards a narrative, but one that has been frozen in time, enabling the viewer to reconsider its meaning and to invent their own accounts. Furthering their theatrical associations, Nathan develops back-stories about each of his works before beginning to paint – including the identity of the protagonists and their motives, as well as what has preceded and what will follow the painted scene. These secret stories, however, remain enticingly hidden from the viewer.

Underlying these theatrical themes is a concern with notions of authenticity and the slippages between the real and the fake. Indeed, by setting his visions within the Northern Romantic landscape tradition, Nathan’s paintings examine the porous boundaries between a range of binaries, including the tensions between nature and artifice, between reality and fiction, and between nature and the stories we therefore tell ourselves about it.

Born in Hastings, Nathan now works from his studio in South-West London. He exhibits regularly and has twice been included in The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, London (2016 & 2014). He gained an MA in Fine Art: Painting from Wimbledon School of Art in 2004.
